The effort to make a northern Minnesota missionary the state’s first Catholic saint is now in the Vatican’s hands. The Diocese of Duluth has submitted the cause for Monsignor Joseph Buh, a Slovenian-born priest who founded 57 parishes across northern Minnesota. Buh also ministered to Iron Range miners and Native American communities before serving as vicar general of the Diocese of Duluth. If the Vatican approves the petition, Buh will receive the title Servant of God, the first formal step toward sainthood.
