“No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples" (Pope St. John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio).
We have all heard the call to evangelize - to share the “Good News.” We hear it repeated in homilies, we read it many times in books or articles, we even tell our students and parishioners about the obligation to evangelize. A typical Catholic response to this call is, “I love my faith but the thought of evangelizing is just too scary!” We misunderstand evangelization as knocking on doors and convincing people to become Catholic or having debates about scripture. Evangelization is not so intimidating once we understand how simple and beautiful it can be to have an encounter with someone that leads to an encounter with Christ.
Our 2018 Discipleship Day will feature St. Paul Evangelization Institute (formerly St. Paul Street Evangelization.) SPEI has been helping Catholics all across the country to share their faith in many settings. They teach a non-confrontational approach to evangelization which aims at strengthening the faith of practicing Catholics, bringing back into the Faith fallen away Catholics, and clearing up misconceptions about the Faith held by non-Catholics.
After Samantha Johnson, a parishioner at Sacred Heart in Murdock attended SPEI evangelization training at her parish, she commented. “I felt well prepared and almost excited about evangelizing. It’s not as scary or difficult as I had imagined.”
Discipleship Day will be held Saturday, Sept. 29 at St. Aloysius in Olivia. The day begins with Mass at 8:30am followed by Basic Evangelization Training offered by St. Paul Evangelization Institute from 10:00am to 2:00pm. It is sure to be empowering and is open to anyone interested in evangelization, not just parish staff. So bring the whole parish! Lunch will be provided.
For registration and promotional information, contact Cindy Blickem (507-233-5325 | email@example.com). For questions about the program for the day, contact Kevin Losleben (507-233-5327 | firstname.lastname@example.org) or Deacon Mike McKeown (507-233-5310 | email@example.com).
