NEW ULM, MN – Deacon Garrett Ahlers, son of Richard and Mary Ahlers of Marshall, will be ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend John M. LeVoir, bishop of the Diocese of New Ulm, on Saturday, June 25, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. A reception will follow the Mass.
Ahlers has spent the last eight years preparing for his ordination. At 19, after graduating from Marshall Senior High School, he enrolled at the University of St. Thomas and St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, graduating in 2012 with a degree in philosophy.
He undertook his theological education at the Gregorian University in Rome while receiving seminary formation at the Pontifical North American College, obtaining a Baccalaureate in his third year, which is comparable to a Master’s of Divinity in the states.
Now he is making final preparations for priestly ordination while nearing the end of his fourth year of studies. He will return to Rome for a final year after a 10-week appointment this summer in the diocese.
Ahlers will offer a Mass of Thanksgiving at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 26 at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Marshall.
