Our
Wheel Chair
Editor’s note: This reflection was written by 13-year
old Peter Wittrock after a conversation with his
mother, Sue, following a church service. Peter reflects on his and his family’s
“journey through life.” The Wittrock’s are members of
St. Philip in Litchfield.

God offers us a wheelchair to
guide us through our lives. Some of us never choose to sit in this chair,
rejecting God. Others accept the invitation Our Lord has presented to us but we
keep the breaks on, never letting our journey progress.
Others choose to take the
breaks off but keep their hands on the wheels so they can control their lives
and go the direction they want to, not the direction God has in mind for them.
We never stop to help others because we are too busy steering our own lives. We
never totally trust Our Lord to take control of our lives. Sometimes our
anxieties are so strong we are rolling down a steep mountainside
uncontrollably, worrying about crashing at the bottom, never asking Jesus to
take hold of our wheelchair and guide us safely in his ways.
Then there are those who
trust in God completely, keeping our hands on our laps and our feet on the
footrests. Never seeing Our Lord behind us, but always trusting He is there.
Knowing He knows our heart, our desires, hearing our prayers and knowing what
is best for us, we trust His will to be done in our lives. He stops us along
the way to help others sit in their wheelchair, to lift their breaks, to take
their hands off the wheels, accepting the wonderful journey He has planned for
us from the beginning. May we always trust in You Heavenly Lord.
In Jesus
Name, Amen.
