Council of Catholic Women: a treasure to be shared

by Joanne Pohland

The New Ulm Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) is a treasure in the church.  Jesus spent his life on earth serving others.  His commandment was to love one another as He loved us.  Through the DCCW, women in our diocese have the means to follow Jesus’ commandment; we have a network of women who profess the same ideals and can work together to continue the work of Jesus.

Nevertheless, what makes the Council of Catholic Women truly a treasure is that through the Council, women can work together not only to serve others but also to serve the Lord.  Through Council, Catholic women can share their faith as they do great and small works of charity.  Prayer and good deeds go hand-in-hand.

I know that the parish CCWs throughout our diocese are accomplishing a great many good deeds.  At the annual diocesan convention last April, it was reported that over $60,000 was given to others, locally and globally.  I believe the amount is even greater because this $60,000 only represents what was actually reported, while many gifts are given without being reported.  As we reflect on what this means, I believe it means that we are on the “right track.”  We are doing some of the work Jesus called us to do.

Because we are a group of women who pray before every meeting, we can know what Jesus calls us to do   We also pray before we begin any activity or project. When we keep prayer at the forefront of what we do, we are bound to do what God calls us to do.

It is then that we can promote the White Ribbon Against Pornography Campaign, Drug and Alcohol Awareness Sunday, family prayer, Turn-Off TV Week, food shelf collections, the Works of Peace Programs through Catholic Relief Services, pass on timely legislative information, promote CCW projects and programs, promote Respect Life Sunday and pro-life organizations and activities, publicize and promote the CCW scholarship program, and even raise funds for the parish, school, and other programs.

The women in the CCW groups around our diocese truly are treasures.  I encourage you to become active in your parish CCW.

I also cordially invite you to the Fall Regional Gatherings to be held in each of the six regions throughout the diocese. They will energize you to do the work we are called to do as Catholics.

Joanne Pohland is the DCCW President from Glencoe, MN
