General
elections November 7
be an informed voter!
As the general elections
approach on November 7, we remember the US Catholic Bishops’ call to faithful
citizenship: "In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a
virtue; participation in the political process is a moral obligation. Believers are called to become informed,
active, and responsible participants in the political process…Believers are
called to be a community of conscience within the larger society, testing every
candidate and party for how they affect human life and dignity, and how they
pursue justice and peace." Make
sure you are an informed voter. Find out how candidates intend to help build
the common good.
In addition to asking
candidates about their positions regarding immigration, war and peace, the
Minnesota Catholic Conference encourages voters to ask candidates:
- How do you plan to promote
life? Will you support programs and
efforts to prevent abortions? Do you oppose the death penalty and euthanasia?
Will you work to strengthen
marriage? How do you intend to support families?
- What is your commitment to
maintaining important safety net programs – programs that provide a lifeline
for the poorest among us? Will you support funding for emergency assistance?
- Do you support investments
in education, including school readiness programs? Will you promote legislation
that increases access to the full range of educational options for all
students?
- Are you prepared to work on
issues like affordable housing, childcare, health care access and support for
senior citizens?
