CCHD thanks diocese for generous contribution
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) recently thanked Bishop John C. Nienstedt and all the faithful of the Diocese of New Ulm, for their very generous 2001 CCHD collection contribution of $18,160.50. This support enables the Church in the United States to help break the cycle of poverty across the nation - the mandate given to CCHD by the Bishops in 1970.
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development helps people living in poverty to become self-sufficient, and to develop lasting solutions to poverty in collaboration with those who are not poor. In this country, thirty-one million people are living in poverty, this includes one of every six children. Through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and with your vital support:
u young men and women receive on the job training through such projects as Kids Cafe in New Orleans and Academy Baker in Chicago;
u economic development ventures are launched by low-wage workers through La Mesa office cleaning cooperative in Albuquerque and Enterprise Staffing Services in Washington, DC;
u senior citizens work together to improve their quality of life and ensure affordable health care through Massachusetts Senior Action and Senior Housing Action in San Francisco.
Pope John Paul II appealed to Christians at the beginning of the third Christian millennium: "Now is the time for a new "creativity" in charity, not only by ensuring that help is effective but also by "getting close" to those who suffer, so that the hand that helps is seen not as a humiliating handout but as a sharing between brothers and sisters. (Pope John Paul II, Novo Millennio Ineunte, #50)
Through the gifts to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the people of the New Ulm diocese help to make this "creativity" a reality.
