Faithful Citizens for a New Millennium
by Cloe Klinkner
"Civic Responsibility for a New Millennium" - our challenge to faith and public policy.
Does this disturb our apathy, disinterest, and distrust in the political process? I hope so! Sometimes we would just like to settle into a Rip Van Winkle sleep and wake up later hoping the nation and the world would have rectified its erring ways, and peace would magically appear.
Unfortunately, it doesnt happen that way. We are all a part of government and with it comes responsibility. As Catholics - as defenders of human life and dignity, committed to justice and peace - we cannot sit on the sidelines and let others dictate the future of society. We are called to be conscientious and faithful citizens who work together to build a "culture of life" in our country.
As much as we cringe from that challenge, we need to realize the U.S. Bishops - issued a statement reminding all Catholics to take an active roll in the elections. ("Called to Faithful Citizenship") We have a moral obligation to participate. We also have the great privilege in our democracy to do so.
Remember, in public discussion and decision-making, the voice of Jesus must be heard! The principles of Catholic social teaching must be applied to all legislative issues.
"As Catholics we need to share our values, raise our voices, and use our votes to shape a society that protects human life, pursues social justice, and practices solidarity. These efforts will strengthen our nation and renew our church."
We pray for Gods grace to provide us with wisdom and courage to face the challenges of faithful citizenship.
