HIV/AIDS

You can make a difference

Yes, this HIV/AIDS epidemic is still with us.

Yes, we do not hear much about it in the news media, as though the drug ‘cocktail’ is some form of cure.

Yes, we must never forget that this is a "Preventable Disease." We must do, each of us, what we can to inform, urge, encourage people that this is preventable.

We also remember that Jesus has commanded us to love one another unconditionally. This ministry to our dear HIV/AIDS folks is a Corporal Work of Mercy.

After more than 20 years into this epidemic, there is still no cure for this disease. Here is a brief review of some startling facts:

l Over 25 million people have died from AIDS.

l Over 15 million children have been orphaned by the loss of one or both parents to AIDS.

l Some 40 million people are currently living with HIV and AIDS.

l Each day over 8,500 men, women and children die of AIDS related causes.

l Each day nearly 14,000 people become infected with HIV including

2,000 children.

l It is estimated that 13,000 children in America under the age of 19 are living with AIDS.

Did you know that right here in Minnesota there is a camp for children living with HIV/AIDS. It is called Camp Heartland and was founded in 1993. It serves more than 700 children and youth each year and covers all program expenses including travel. The programs include opportunities for fun and recreation plus a chance to be encouraged and accepted. This is a safe haven where they can build lasting relationships and a lifetime of memories. Anyone can help to make a difference in the life of a child impacted by HIV/AIDS.
