St.
Peter, Canby students know first hand the power of prayer
by Sandi Kollar,
Principal
St. Peter, Canby
“The School of St. Peter in
Canby attempts to help students live out the gospel message of Jesus in
community, in worship, and in service.”
Students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 have recently made these words from our
Mission Statement come alive.
With the help of their
teacher, Mr. David Biermaier, they have committed
themselves to prayer. Praying for the
sick, the lonely, the oppressed, and anyone who needs or wants their prayers
has become a daily part of their classroom.
Students, faculty, staff, and
members of the parish submit names of friends and relatives who need prayers.
The students then spend time each week praying for these people.
They also send out a card
with the poem “His Healing Hands” by Helen Parker in it.
Many times the students receive responses from the people they pray for letting them know just how powerful their prayers have been. One person recently responded, “I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks and say how proud I am of our school, St. Peter’s.” Yes, the Spiritual Works of Mercy are alive and well in our Catholic schools.
