Safe Environment programs address sexual misconduct in the Church
Providing a safe environment for children, youth, and vulnerable adults is a key component of the United States Catholic Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
In September and October, the Diocese of New Ulm conducted mandatory safe environment training for all those who work in our parishes, schools, and religious education programs.
On September 30, all pastoral leaders and parish staffs of the diocese gathered in Redwood Falls, MN, to hear a day-long presentation by Father Roman Paur, O.S.B. Participants learned ways to prevent and identify child sexual abuse and ways for the Church to respond to the present crisis.
On October 20 in Sleepy Eye, all personnel from the Catholic schools and catechists in the diocese along with others involved in various ministries received the safe environment training. The presentation helped educators realize what abuse is, be aware of signs in students and young people who may be experiencing abuse, and how to build a safe community setting for students and others.
In compliance with the Charter, all volunteers who work in various ministries also need to receive this training. Volunteers in religious education and in Catholic schools will be trained by Directors of Religious Education and school principals who will follow a program developed by the diocese.
Also in compliance of the Charter, there will be on-going training each year for all people involved in ministry throughout the diocese.
