CCW economic and social justice challenges

by Cloe Klinkner

The National Council of Catholic Women Mission Statement in part declares that its programs are "to respond with Gospel values to the needs of the church and society in the modern world." This becomes possible through the work of its six commissions, one of which is Legislation.

"Guided by Catholic Social Teaching (this commission) assists women in understanding the legislative process, provides the skill to analyze current and proposed laws, and promotes activities that will bring about greater social and economic justice in our society" (from NCCW Resource Manual).

This is no small task - it is a great challenge which may frighten those of us not too familiar with the legislative process. But remember every journey begins with the first step, perhaps small, but courageous when gifted with God’s grace.

The goal for this year’s Legislation Commission is a simple one: Continue to be "the voice of Jesus" in interpretation and action in social and economic justice issues at the local, state and national level.

The church, and we the women of the church, in relating to the political processes must strive to educate ourselves and others by highlighting the moralities of public policies and take part in debates on issues affecting the common good. There needs to be a life ethic that frames all legislative issues.

As we attempt to meet these challenges, we place our efforts in God’s hands. We pray that the Holy Spirit guides our elected officials as they labor to create a "nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all."
