Good News for Everyone!

Catholic Communication Campaign collection May 14-15

”This has been a year of many debuts made possible by the hard work of the staff of the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) and our diocesan communicators with the support of our diocesan bishops and parish priests and the generosity of the people in the pews,” according to Msgr. Francis J. Maniscalco, Director of the U. S. Bishops Department of Communications, which oversees the CCC.

This year, the Catholic Communication Collection will be taken up in parishes in the Diocese of New Ulm the weekend of May 14-15. Half the collection remains in the diocese for its own communications efforts while half supports the activities of the national CCC Office.

The Catholic Communication Campaign is an activity of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. For more than twenty-five years, this annual collection has supported a variety of Catholic programming both nationally and locally.

Locally, the Catholic Communication Campaign supports diocesan produced radio, television, and print projects that convey positive messages and bring an awareness of God’s presence to the public. The annual campaign also assists in supporting television Mass Leaflets for those unable to attend Mass; the diocesan Web site, www.dnu.org; The Prairie Catholic, the official newspaper of the Diocese of New Ulm; as well as the diocesan Media Resource Center which provides electronic and print material to assist parishes and schools in areas such as religious education, adult enrichment and leadership development programs. For further information contact the diocesan Office of Communications, (507) 359-2966; dnu@dnu.org.

Nationally, video programming has proved to be a cost effective means of engaging people of all ages, including programming appearing on the affiliates of national networks which includes:

“Faith Works: Across the U.S.A.” that aired on ABC-TV affiliates in October 2004 as part of the “Vision & Values” series. It examines “typical” days in the lives of several Catholics as they live out their faith.

“Come to the Water: The Adult Journey to Baptism” aired on ABC-TV stations this spring. This program presented the spiritual journey of adults from various backgrounds seeking baptism.

“Personally Speaking” with Msgr. Jim Lisante, a one-hour talk show with guests Tim Russert,  Margaret Colin, and Aaron Neville aired on  NBC-TV affiliates in June 2004 as part of the “Horizons of the Spirit” series.

“Our lives are saturated with media messages. It sometimes seems that the world is full of only bad news,” Msgr. Maniscalco said.  “The Catholic Communication Campaign is How the Good News Gets Around.”
