RENEW it yourself!
Lent
by Lucille ODonnell
A priest told the story of his journey back to the church. After leaving the church for several years while in his twenties, he met up with a small faith sharing group who inspired him to return to the Church. Later he entered the seminary and was ordained. He testified that during his journey he realized how "impoverished" he had been in catechesis. When he was confronted to defend his faith he was unable to do so.
As we begin a new season of RENEW 2000 we also begin the season of Lent. This season of RENEW 2000 focuses on ecumenism. This may be a good time to slow down and reflect on the richness and fullness of our Catholic tradition. Perhaps we may resolve to purchase a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, subscribe to one Catholic periodical in our home, or read a good book on the Catholic tradition and then resolve to share it with another person of another religion. Sometimes we fail to evangelize because we are unsure of our belief just as this priest was unsure of what he believed. When we have clarity in our own beliefs we will be able to see what we have in common with those of other religions and then come together in unity.
