A
dime for ‘every’ mile!
New Ulm - A
fun St. Anthony Elementary School project to raise money for the New Ulm
Diocesan Mission Parish of San Lucas Toliman,
Guatemala began as an Advent project and lasted through Catholic Schools Week.
The goal was to collect
enough dimes to represent each mile between Minnesota and Guatemala - over
3,000 miles! To monitor their
collection, various colored racing stripes, laced with dimes in increments of
$10, ran from one end of the gym floor to the other. Each line represented a different
classroom. In total, the students
collected $1,608 or 16,080 dimes, 5 times the distance to San Lucas.
The check was presented to
Father Gregory Schaffer, a priest of the New Ulm
diocese and pastor of San Lucas Toliman Mission.
