Debate over embryonic stem cell research
In the debate over embryonic stem cell research, the Church has focused on the moral and ethical implications involved. The Church has consistently maintained that all life is sacred and inviolable. In his 1995 encyclical The Gospel of Life, Pope John Paul II wrote, "It is immoral to produce human embryos destined to be exploited as disposable biological material."
From the perspective of the Church, the collection of embryonic stem cells kills the embryo, thus taking a human life. This process appears to be contrary to ethical and responsible scientific practices that disallow research on a subject without that individuals consent. Ultimately, we feel that regardless of the potential medical benefits, it is wrong to rely upon the destruction of defenseless human beings for the possible benefit of others. At the same time, we contend that the use of stem cells from adults, placentas and umbilical cord blood continues to hold great promise - without destroying human life.
Since 1973, Minnesota Statute has prohibited the use of a human embryo, fetus or fertilized egg in scientific experimentation. However, this year a bill has been introduced that would remove the prohibition on this type of research. The bill, House File 2049/Senate File 2077, would allow and endorse embryonic stem cell research.
The sponsors of this legislation are motivated by a desire to end human suffering. However, the Church contends that it is inappropriate to create and destroy one human life for the benefit of another.
Ultimately, we echo the U.S. Catholic Bishops who stated, "We call on government and medical researchers to base their decisions regarding biotechnology and human experimentation on respect for the inherent dignity and inviolability of human life from its very beginning."
