A reason to celebrate!

St. John’s in Searles marks 100 years of existence

More than 250 people gathered Sunday, May 1, 2005 to celebrate the Centennial Celebration of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles. Parish members, family and visitors enjoyed a day of socializing, dancing and entertainment.

Fr. John Richter and Fr. Eugene Hackert presided over a celebratory Mass. Afterwards, families and friends of the St. John’s community enjoyed a catered brunch. During brunch, Sr. Beth Ann Dillon, St. John’s pastoral administrator, shared a Powerpoint slide show containing photos of past and present families and students submitted by parish members. Johnny Helget and Dain’s Dutchmen also entertained guests with polkas and waltzes throughout the afternoon.

A former classroom, now used as a chapel, housed a historical display containing artifacts found in the rectory and various other areas of the church. The display included a historical timeline with photos, original church sketches of 1936,  lectionaries, vestments and many other interesting items.

Those in attendance also had the opportunity to walk through the new  addition, built in 2004. It was dedicated on Easter Sunday by Bishop Nienstedt. The parish also hosted several baseball games in the Searles Ball Park. Although the weather forced most of the activities inside to the church basement,  those in attendance experienced an enjoyable afternoon.

Souvenirs such as crocks, church directories, Christmas tree ornaments, a new release of the first parish cookbook and a new edition are still available for anyone interested by contacting St. John’s Church in Searles at (507) 359-4244.
