Christmas Experiences in Bethlehem

by Lucille O’Donnell

Christmas is celebrated in various ways in different cultures but always it is centered on Christ. Christmas means being a Christ-bearer as was Mary who gave unconditionally. She went that extra distance to participate in Christ’s ministry. She went towards others and extended her hand to render service and give joy. In the story of the Visitation, Mary took time to enter into the home of Elizabeth and stayed with her to share and be in touch with the details of her daily life.

To be a Christ-bearer as was Mary, we are called to go toward others and extend our friendship and love, to enter the homes of others and welcome others to our homes, to share with each other stories of pain, joy and sorrow. This is what gift giving is all about.

Take time this Christmas as individuals and as a parish community to discover new avenues in being Christ-bearers as healers, visitors and servant leaders to social justice issues in your community.
