A day to celebrate marriage
World Marriage Day-February 13
February 13 is World Marriage Day. The National World Marriage Day brochure says that "by 1982, 43 United States governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations began spreading to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries."
It is celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. "In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day. World Marriage Day celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year."
The permanent theme adopted for the day is "Love One Another". Loving one another is a daily decision, simple but challenging.
The symbol for the day is a couple seen symbolically as two candle-like figures. It is to remind couples that married love is a calling to enlighten the world. Joined by a heart, this is to show love as the power fostering unity and giving the couple the ability to be life-giving in their relationship with one another and others.
