Catholic Social Teachings for Today
RENEW 2000 -promoting the work of peace in society
by Lucille ODonnell
Throughout this last season of RENEW 2000 and beyond we have been reflecting on the Catholic Social Teachings. Major themes running through these teachings are human dignity, community, rights and duties, option for the poor, participation, dignity of work and the rights of workers, stewardship of creation, solidarity, the common good, the role of government, and the promotion of peace.
As we become a more diverse culture and a more interdependent world these teachings fit today as they did over one hundred years ago when Pope Leo XIII issued the document Rerum Novarum, (The Condition of Labor).
We may wonder what we can do to promote a just world. Perhaps we can start by respecting the dignity of people who don't share our values, or don't behave as we do, or whose approach to life is different from our own, and most of all by being a peacemaker in our community.
