HIV/AIDS
Ministry
Are We One Body?
by Rev. Paul A. Schumacher
Yes, HIV/AIDS is still with
us. It is certainly not the death sentence that it was 20 years ago when I
began this ministry. Today folks are living longer and healthier lives which
make the ministry much more positive. But, it is a life-changing disease and
presently the age groups most likely to contract the virus are young people and
senior citizens. Both these groups believe that somehow they are not
vulnerable.
The disease has not gone away.
The needs of those living with the disease have increased, since living longer
they have increased medical costs and some of them are not doing well. Thus,
they need our love, our care, our support, and our inclusion.
National Catholic HIV/AIDS
Ministry Conference
The theme for the Annual
National Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry Conference to be held July 12-16 is
"Are We One Body?" The question arises out of the fact that we

This might be the question
for each of us in our parish community. Do we believe that we are One Body? Is
everyone really included? After 20 years of experience in HIV/AIDS ministry I
can say that the Catholic Church response has been quite adequate, but we
cannot rest with that. When it comes to the pastoral level there is much more
that can be done.
We must look beyond our local
needs. This is also an international concern. When it comes to the Body of
Christ there are no borders. About 25 million Africans have been infected with
HIV and AIDS - killing 6,500 Africans every day. Promises of help are made, but
often are not kept. "Bread for the World" reminds us that at a cost
of less than $2.00 a day per person, those facing death from HIV/AIDS can
receive life-saving medicines.
Saint or sinner, we are One
Body in Jesus.
