Chrism Mass to be celebrated April 8 in Redwood Falls

by JoAnn Borchert

The Mass of Holy Chrism is a celebration of the whole Church of New Ulm. We gather with the Bishop at one Eucharist to invoke God’s consecration of the Chrism and the blessing of the Oils of Catechumens and the Sick. These oils will make real Christ’s presence throughout the diocese in the year ahead.

The Chrism is used to anoint people in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. The Chrism is a sign that in Baptism we enter into the paschal mystery of Christ, the Anointed One.

Jesus came to fulfill God’s plan of salvation as priest, prophet, and king. When we are baptized, we too, are anointed and come to share the ministry and mission of Jesus as priest, prophet, and king.

The Oil of Chrism is also used in the dedication and consecration of church buildings and altars. The Oil of the Sick is used in the Sacrament of Anointing for the blessing, strengthening, and healing of those who are ill or advanced in age. The Oil of Catechumens is used for adults and infants to be baptized so that they might be strengthened by the Word of God and may be stirred to respond generously to God’s call.

The Chrism Mass is one of the principle expressions of the fullness of the bishop’s priesthood and signifies the close unity of the priests with him.

Because of the close link between the oils in the sacramental life of the Church and ministry of its priests, an important part of the celebration is the renewal of commitment to priestly service by the presbytery of the diocese. In the midst of the assembly, the ordained ask God’s assistance in remaining faithful to their mission to serve the people of God formed by the sacraments.

Everyone is welcome to join in this important celebration of who we are as a people of God.
