"Hands-on" introduction to school financial management

New Ulm - A Catholic School Financial Management Workshop, presented by the National Catholic Educational Association, Washington DC, the New Ulm Diocesan Office of Schools, and the New Ulm Diocesan Office of Finance, will be held April 24, 2001, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Church of St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Sleepy Eye, MN.

This practical, "hands-on" introduction to elementary school finance for pastors, principals, and school education members was piloted at six diocesan locations around the country during the 1999-2000 school year and is underwritten by FACTS Management Company, Mutual of America, and SMART Tuition Management Services, Inc.

Topics of the day will include: How to prepare and interpret a school budget - the role of mission in the budget; Relationship between and basic components of budget: income and expenses; Pitfalls to avoid; Types of data needed to make realistic projects; Importance of careful monitoring; Diocesan support/intervention/policies; "Systems" perspective for budgeting; Tuition models in use around the country: pros and cons; Nontraditional sources of revenue; Stability markers for effective Catholic elementary schools; Available resources for finance management; Optional topics: introduction to development, strategic planning.

Facilitator of the workshop is Dr. Claire Helm, Vice President of Operations and Director of Office of Leadership Development, National Catholic Education Association, Washington, DC. Presenter is Tim Dwyer, Superintendent, Diocese of Rochester, New York.
