News Release #386Released to media on July 11, 2005National Catholic Youth Choir to perform at St. Mary's in Tracy, MNTRACY, MN – The 2005 National Catholic Youth Choir will perform in concert on Thursday, July 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Mary, 285 6th Street, Tracy, MN. The public is welcome - free will offering.
The National Catholic Youth Choir was founded in 2000 by Fr. Anthony Ruff, O.S.B., and is now in its fifth season. The choir is sponsored by the Saint John’s University School of Theology/Seminary in Collegeville, MN. This choir was begun under the motto Spreading the Catholic Faith Through Great Music as a response to the call of Pope John Paul II for a “new evangelization.” The choir sings music of various Christian traditions, ranging from medieval Gregorian chant to twentieth century music.
Over 50 high school students going into grades 10, 11, and 12 from across the United States are selected to participate in the choir on the basis of written applications, recommendations, and taped auditions. The conductor of the choir is internationally renowned choral clinician Dr. Axel Theimer. Choir participants attend a summer camp which includes a choir rehearsal; daily classes based on their repertoire in religion, music theory, and music history; daily worship and prayer; and sports and recreation.
This year the choir is singing at three concerts and several M asses, and joining the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada during their Hymn Festival being held at Saint John's this summer.
