Diocesan Ministries Appeal

Welcome back to The Prairie Catholic after a two month hiatus! I hope your summer was as enjoyable and restorative as mine. Now we look forward to a liturgical and academic year of enriching activity and life-giving events.

In addition to continuing my parish and school visits, I intend to be present for the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Day on September 9, 2006, to see first hand how well we are assisting young engaged couples for their life-long, sacramental union. I also accepted an invitation in late September to visit the Church in Kerala, India, with the hope of meeting bishops and major religious superiors who might loan our Diocese some priests. Presently, I plan to make a trip to Poland next spring for the same purpose.

But the truly exciting, new project for this fall is the Diocesan Ministries Appeal Hope for Years to Come/Esperanza  para  los Años Venideros, scheduled for the weekend of November 18-19, 2006. Why is this so exciting? Well, it will be the first time in the 49-year history of our local Church that we will have the financial ability to respond to the four most pressing pastoral needs for ensuring our future, namely:

1) Support for priesthood candidates;

2) Preparation of permanent deacons and the formation of lay ministers;

3) Education of our youth and children in the faith;

4) A Catholic Charities outreach to help families who are experiencing emotional problems or family discord as well as to assist with adoption requests.

Each member of a parish or Area Faith Community will be asked to make a pledge to the DMA over a period of ten or twelve months (i.e. a pledge of $1,000 can be paid in $100 installments over ten months).  Once the parish or Area Faith Community reaches its goal, everything that is pledged over and above will be returned to the parish to support a special project like a new roof, new carpet for the sanctuary or paying off an old debt.  And this money will not be taxed as is the case with other fundraisers.  The result is a win-win situation for the Diocese and the local parish or Area Faith Community.

As American Catholics, we have been rather slow in developing a sense of stewardship as specified by the Gospels.  Quite frankly, both our Jewish and Protestant brothers and sisters with their practice of annual tithing are much better about stewardship than we have been.

For the 21st Century Catholic, money is the source of much of our security. It affects every aspect of our lifestyle. Yet rarely do we consciously bring our savings account into our considerations of faith.  We give our time to the Lord.  We give our hearts to the Lord.  But how often do we say, "Lord, all of my savings is yours as well." 

That is why the DMA is so much more than a fundraiser, it is in fact a faithraiser. It takes faith to say, "Lord, all that I have – time, talent and treasure – is yours" and truly mean it. But if I do make such a pledge, then I will grow exponentially in my faith. As St. Paul told the Corinthians: "Thin sowing means thin reaping; the more you sow, the more you reap.  Each should give what he has decided . . . not grudgingly or because he has to, for God loves a cheerful giver."

And that is why a successful DMA is so exciting: as a Church we are able to offer greater service and as Catholics we turn our lives over more fully to Christ. It doesn’t get better than that!

Falta Mucho por Recorrer

La Campaña para los Ministerios Diocesano es un proyecto nuevo que se estará llevando a cabo el 18-19 de noviembre ¿Por qué nos llena de entusiasmo? porque esta es la primera vez en 49 años en la historia de nuestra Iglesia local que tendremos la capacidad financiera para responder a las cuatro urgentes necesidades pastorales que garantizarían nuestro futuro, particularmente:

1)     Asistir a los candidatos que estén estudiando el sacerdocio;

2)     preparar a diáconos permanentes y la formación de ministros laicos;

3)     educar en la fe a nuestros niños y jóvenes;

4)     una oficina de Catholic Charities para dar ayuda a las familias que tengan problemas  emocionales, desacuerdo familiar y para asistir con adopciones.

Pediremos a cada miembro parroquial o Comunidad del Área de Fe a comprometerse a donar a la campaña por un periodo de diez a doce meses (ejemplo, si usted se compromete a donar $1,000. usted estaría pagando doce pagos de $100. mensualmente). Una vez que la parroquia o Comunidad del Área de Fe alcancen su meta, devolveremos todo el dinero restante a su parroquia para sus respectivos proyectos tales como cambiar el techo de la parroquia, cambiar la alfombra o terminar de pagar alguna deuda. Lo bueno de este dinero, es que no se tiene que pagar impuestos. El resultado es que la diócesis, parroquias o las Comunidades del Área de Fe saldremos favorecidos.

Para el católico del siglo 21, el dinero es la fuente primordial de seguridad. El dinero afecta cada aspecto del modo como vivimos. Pero a pesar de eso, muy pocas veces damos a conciencia de nuestros ahorros. Le damos nuestro tiempo, corazón, pero cuantas veces decimos, "Señor, todos mis ahorros también te pertenecen."

Por eso la Campaña para los Ministerios Diocesanos es más que una colecta de dinero, en realidad es una colecta de fe. Se tiene que tener fe para decir, "Señor, todo lo que tengo – tiempo, talento y tesoro – te pertenece a ti" pero decirlo de corazón. Al hacer ese compromiso, creceré espontáneamente en mi fe. Así como San Pablo le dice a los Corintios:
            

El que siembra poco, poco cosecha; el que siembra mucho, mucho cosecha. Cada uno debe dar según lo que haya decidido en su corazón, y no de mala gana o a la fuerza, porque Dios ama al que da con alegría.

Por esa razón la Campaña para los Ministerios Diocesanos nos llena de emoción: Como Iglesia tenemos la capacidad de ofrecer un servicio extenso y como católicos le entregamos todo de nosotros a Cristo. No hay nada mejor que eso.
