The large "loss on investments" of $1,682,405 is the item that stands out the most on the "Statement of Activities." This loss reflects the troubled state of the economy and the drastic fall in stock prices during the fiscal year. This loss is a "paper loss," but it still must be shown on the "Statement of Activities" for the purpose of full disclosure. It is important to note that since June 30, 2009, the stock market has bounced back dramatically, erasing much of the "paper loss." 

The change in assets is a negative $1,283,890. However, this again is due to the "paper loss" of $1,682,405.  Despite the negative change in net assets, the Diocese of New Ulm has been assured by its outside auditor that the diocese remains in sound financial condition. The sound financial condition of the diocese is underscored by the total net asset figure as of June 30, 2009:  $11,497,675. Again, it is important to note that the stock market has come back significantly since June 30, 2009. As of January 31, 2010, the net asset figure has risen $1,185,047 to $12,682,722.

The investment losses notwithstanding, the diocese had a good year. The pie charts show, by percentage, the various items that compose the revenues and expenses of the diocese. The goal had been to move to obtaining 1/3 of the revenues from the Diocesan United Fund (DUF), 1/3 from the Diocesan Ministries Appeal (DMA), and 1/3 from other sources. However, the loss on investments has changed these percentages significantly. The goal for the various sources of revenue will be revisited in the future. 

Remember, the DUF (Diocesan United Fund) is the annual assessment for each of the seventy-six parishes of the Diocese of New Ulm based on the number of households and Sunday offertory collections. On the other hand, the DMA (Diocesan Ministries Appeal) supports new ministries, in most cases started after the first DMA in 2006. These ministries include the education of our seminarians, Catholic Charities, the Permanent Diaconate Program, and the ongoing education of lay ministers who will continue to serve day in and day out in each of our parishes. 

The budgeting process for 2010-2011 is completed. The 2010-2011 budget has been reviewed by the Finance Council, the Budget Review Committee (which interviews the director of each of the offices of the Diocese of New Ulm), the Diocesan Pastoral Council, and the College of Consultors (composed of priests of the diocese). I have accepted the budget. The projected revenues for 2010-2011 are $3,432,185 and projected expenses are $3,459,939, for a projected budget deficit of $27,754. The deficit will be funded by the reserves of the diocese.   

Each Catholic belongs to a parish, each parish belongs to an area faith community, and the area faith communities (and four separate parishes) compose the Diocese of New Ulm. Working together and giving generously, we can accomplish many good things for the people of the diocese. I pray that the Lord will continue to pour out his blessings on us as we look with hope into the future.

Living Our Faith When on Vacation

Sometimes, we leave our faith at home when we go on summer vacation. But, Jesus wants to be an integral part of our lives every day and everywhere. So, we should continue to pray each day when on vacation, even though it might not be the way we pray when at home.  Finding a Catholic church at which to attend Mass on weekends is made easier by going to the Web site, Masstimes.com. 

It is important to be a people of charity and kindness on vacation.  We face different challenges and temptations when on vacation. So, we should ask for the special graces we need to say "yes" to Jesus and "no" to temptations when they come at us from a different direction.  Modesty in dress should be attended to as well during the warmer summer months.

En esta edición del Prairie Catholic para su revisión es la "Declaración de Actividades" de la Diócesis de New Ulm para el año fiscal que va del 1 de Julio de 2008 hasta el 30 de Junio de 2009. Las cifras son de la declaración financiera ya auditados.

A pesar de las pérdidas de la inversión la diócesis tuvo un buen año. Los gráficos muestran en porcentaje los diversos elementos que componen los ingresos y gastos de la diócesis. El objetivo ha sido mover 1/3 de los ingresos del Fondo Unido Diocesano (DUF), 1/3 de la Campaña para los Ministerios Diocesanos y 1/3 de otras fuentes. Sin embargo, la pérdida de inversiones ha cambiado estos porcentajes significativamente. El objetivo de las diferentes fuentes de ingresos se examinará en un futuro.

Recuerde el DUF (Fondo Unido Diocesano) es la cuota anual para cada una de las setenta y seis parroquias de la Diócesis de New Ulm en función del número de hogares y las colectas durante los ofertorios de los días domingos. Por otro lado, el DMA (Campaña para los Ministerios Diocesanos) apoya ministerio nuevos, en la mayoría de los casos comenzaron después del primer DMA en el 2006. Estos ministerios incluyen educación de nuestros seminaristas, Caridades Católicas, el programa del Diaconado Permanente y la educación continua de Ministros Laicos que continuarán sirviendo día a día en cada una de nuestras parroquias.

El proceso de elaboración del presupuesto para el 2009-2010 está completo. El presupuesto para el 2010-2011 ha sido revisado por el Consejo de Finanzas, el Comité de Revisión de Presupuesto (quien entrevista al director de cada oficina de la Diócesis de New Ulm), el Consejo Pastoral Diocesano y el Colegio de Consultores (compuesto por sacerdotes de la diócesis). Cada católico pertenece a una parroquia, cada parroquia pertenece a una Comunidad del Área de Fe y la Comunidad del Área de Fe (y cuatro parroquias separadas) componen la Diócesis de New Ulm. Trabajando juntos y dando generosamente, podemos lograr muchas cosas buenas para el pueblo de la diócesis. Ruego que el Señor siga derramando sus bendiciones sobre nosotros, mientras vemos con esperanza el futuro.

Vivir nuestra fe cuando estamos de vacaciones

A veces, cuando nos vamos de vacaciones dejamos nuestra fe en casa. Pero, Jesús quiere ser una parte integral de nuestras vidas todos los días y en todas partes.  Por lo tanto, debemos continuar orando cada día cuando estemos de vacaciones, aunque puede que no sea como oramos en casa. Ahora en día, encontrar una iglesia católica en la que asistir a misa los fines de semana es más fácil en www.Masstimes.com. 

Cuando estamos de vacaciones es importante ser un pueblo de caridad y bondad. Nos enfrentamos a diferentes retos y tentaciones cuando uno se encuentra de vacaciones.  Por lo tanto, debemos pedir por una tolerancia especial para decir  "sí" a Jesús y "no" a las tentaciones. Tener modestia en el vestir durante los meses más cálidos del verano.
